Police probe baby assaults
Two mothers facing charges after incidents in Leominster

LEOMINSTER— Two mothers who live in the same apartment building are charged with kicking their young children — a boy who is about to turn 2 years old and a girl who is not yet a year old — in separate incidents this week, according to district court records.
Police said they found the girl living with her mother in an apartment described as being in "a state of squalor," according to records.
The mother told police that to provide snacks for the child she sprinkles corn flakes on the rug in the living room and her daughter eats them off the floor, according to court records.
Amanda M. Kennedy, 21, of 4 State St., Apartment B, is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot), according to court records. She was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to return to court Oct. 12. A person who had been staying with Ms. Kennedy for a couple of days told police that while they were having an argument on Thursday, the baby girl was crying loudly, records stated.
"She walks by and kicks the baby in the head with her shoe, hard," according to the statement by Nathaniel Besel, 18, of Cheyenne, Wyo. "The baby toppled on her face."
Ms. Kennedy told police she did not kick her child. Police Officer Aaron F. Kennedy wrote in his report that the apartment where the mother and child lived was filthy and cluttered. The rug did not appear to have been vacuumed for some time, according to his report.
Department of Social Services workers found numerous flies in the kitchen, which was full of dirty dishes and smelled awful, according to Officer Kennedy's report. The refrigerator was empty, but a limited amount of baby food was in a cabinet area, according to his report. DSS took custody of the girl, who was born on Sept. 11, 2005.
The other incident allegedly took place Saturday at the Bickford's Family Restaurant at 526 North Main St., court records stated.
Jennifer Champagne, 24, of 4 State St., Apartment D, was eating breakfast at the restaurant along with her son and the boy's grandmother. An employee said the two women became "increasingly mean" to the child during a tumultuous meal, records stated.
When the boy did not want to sit in a highchair, the grandmother instead put him in a booster seat on a regular chair, causing a fight between the two women, according to records.
When their food came out, the two women were "still at each other" but they had become increasingly mean to the boy, records stated. The boy did not want to sit in the booster seat, so the grandmother was grabbing him and trying to force him to sit on her lap, records stated.
Customers in the restaurant were commenting on their behavior, according to records. The child vomited on the floor, which caused the grandmother to become very angry. She took him to the bathroom while the mother went to the car to get a diaper bag and change of clothes, according to records.
After the child was changed, the three returned to the table and the two adults got into a fight about who would pay the bill, records stated.
The grandmother took the bill to the front counter and "she started yelling and said it was the worst breakfast she had ever had," according to an employee's statement to police.
The grandmother asked to speak to the manager and the restaurant ended up writing off the bill, records stated.
In the meantime, Ms. Champagne was taking the boy into the parking lot and started dragging him by the arm when his legs gave out, records stated. Ms. Champagne allegedly kicked the child to get him back up and kicked him another time, records stated. She also is accused of slapping him in the face, records stated.
A customer who saw the incident from the front window wrote down Ms. Champagne's license plate number and the incident was reported to police, records stated.
Ms. Champagne is charged with assault and battery and with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot), according to court records. She was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to return to court Sept. 14. Ms. Champagne is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 274 pounds, according to court records. Court records say Ms. Champagne told police she did not kick or slap her son. The Department of Social Services removed the boy from his home. He was born on Sept. 14, 2004.

Prayer for Peace
Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it.

What guides your life?
Oh, how I love your law! I think about it all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for your commands are my constant guide. Yes, I have more insight than my teachers, for I am always thinking of your decrees. I am even wiser than my elders, for I have kept your commandments. I have refused to walk on any path of evil, that I may remain obedient to your word. I haven't turned away from your laws, for you have taught me well. How sweet are your words to my taste; they are sweeter than honey. Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life. Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.

John 14:1-17
1) " Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. 2) In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3) And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4) And you know the way where I am going." 5) Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" 6) Jesus said to him, " I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me. 7) If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him." 8) Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied." 9) Jesus said to him, " Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, `Show us the Father'? 10) Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11) Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves. 12) " Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. 13) Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; 14) if you ask anything in my name, I will do it. 15) " If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16) And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever, 17) even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.

Psalm 18:1-20
I love thee, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
The cords of death encompassed me, the torrents of perdition assailed me;
the cords of Sheol entangled me, the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry.
Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him.
He bowed the heavens, and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.
He rode on a cherub, and flew; he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his covering around him, his canopy thick clouds dark with water.
Out of the brightness before him there broke through his clouds hailstones and coals of fire.
The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire.
And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; he flashed forth lightnings, and routed them.
Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare, at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.
He reached from on high, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me.
They came upon me in the day of my calamity; but the LORD was my stay.
He brought me forth into a broad place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.
