WHEN YOU DON;T FEEL THE LOVE

When You Don't Feel
the Love

It's easy to forget to 'love thy neighbor'—especially when that neighbor is preventing you from getting your morning coffee.
By Eileen Mitchell

It’s a gray, bone-chilling winter morning, the kind of damp dawn that invites me to stay in sweats, curl up on the sofa in front of a crackling fire, and eat freshly baked chocolate chip cookies while watching my latest Netflix addiction, Gilmore Girls.  Instead, the ungodly hour of 6:45 a.m. finds me already standing in line at Starbucks. I need to fuel up before continuing my hour-long trek to work.  I’m comatose, cold, and cranky.

And it’s a Monday, which magnifies my misery.

But the line is short, thank goodness. There are just two guys in front of me. They are annoyingly chipper and having an animated conversation.  When those magical words, “Next!” are called out, they approach the counter and only at this time appear to notice the vast menu on the wall. This creates quite the dilemma.

What shall they have?

Another conversation ensues. They look at the menu, then at each other, and back at the menu. They point, analyze, debate, and discuss.  Who knew coffee was capable of triggering such stimulating dialogue? The broad selection of tasty drinks has obviously boggled their senses and they are overwhelmed with the numerous choices before them. Tea or coffee? Hot or cold? Nonfat, decaf, whip or foam? Tall, Grande, or Venti?  And what flavor syrup? They must carefully weigh all options before rendering this critical decision.

I want to strangle them.

After several minutes of deliberating the benefits of green tea versus soy milk versus dark chocolate, glory be to God, they finally place their order. I’m about to whip out the words that are perched on the tip of my tongue, “grande soy latte, extra hot, no foam,” when the two men suddenly glance to their left. They’ve just noticed the pastry bar.

“Wait a sec,” they tell the cashier.

As they meander over to peruse the wide selection of breads, scones, and muffins, I hear impatient shuffling behind me. I turn around to see that the line is now snaking towards the front door. Fellow bleary-eyed commuters, in dire need of a caffeine fix, have their arms crossed and lips pursed. They are not happy.

Nor am I.  A glimpse at my watch tells me that this delay will cause me to hit the dreaded college traffic, which will add an extra 15 minutes to my already intolerable commute. All thanks to these blithering nimrods, who seem to think that placing a simple coffee order is on par with the Camp David Accord.  I fanaticize grabbing each man’s head and clanking them together, like Moe would do to Larry and Curly.

Now the two are pondering poppy seed muffins and banana bread. Babies will be conceived, born, and registered for preschool before these dolts ever complete their order.

And so I start to woolgather, reviewing my weekend.  It was a good one. I’d enjoyed an ice-cream outing with my niece on Saturday, participated in a greyhound rescue Meet and Greet in the afternoon, and on Sunday attended church at the usual hour. It had been an amazing service, thanks in part to a videotaped interview featuring Bono, lead singer of the rock band U2.  Talking with Willow Creek Community Church pastor, Bill Hybels in Illinois, Bono had championed causes such as debt relief to struggling countries, AIDS, poverty, and world hunger. “Christ won't let you walk away because it's difficult, expensive, and a moral hazard," he stressed. Repeatedly, he emphasized that care and concern for others should not be restricted by boundaries and borders.

I was nodding throughout the entire service, agreeing with everything he was saying, while being duly impressed with his eloquence and passion. I’d always enjoyed U2’s music, but this side of Bono was truly an eye-opener. And then, leaning forward in his chair, he delivered a simple reminder:

Love Thy Neighbor is a commandment, not a suggestion.”

Like a jolting smack upside the head, Bono’s words come back to me as Larry and Curly finally place their order and prepare to move on. One guy turns around and gives me a sheepish smile.

“Sorry we took so long,” he apologizes.

“Don’t worry about it,” I mumble, feeling very much the hypocrite. How impressed I’d been with yesterday’s message, yet how quickly I’d forgotten it.

Love thy neighbor, indeed. Even at Starbucks.

Nobody ever said it would be easy.

GOD WON'T ASK
Posted On 03/29/2007 09:08:54

GOD WON'T ASK . . . WHEN YOU GET THERE . .

God Won't Ask...

1. God won't ask what kind of fancy car you drove.
He will ask how many people you took to church who didn't have transportation.

2. God won't ask the square footage of your house.

He will ask how many people you helped who didn't have a house.

3. God won't ask how many fancy clothes you had in your closet.

He will ask how many of those clothes you gave away to the Salvation Army.

4. God won't ask what social class you were in.

He will ask what kind of "class" you displayed.

5. God won't ask how many material possessions you had.

He will ask whether those material possessions dictated your life.

6. God won't ask what your highest salary was.

He will ask if you trampled over any people to obtain that salary.

7. God won't ask how much overtime you worked.

He will ask did you work overtime for your family.

8. God won't ask how many promotions you received.

He will ask what you did to promote others.

9. God won't ask what your job title was.

He will ask did you perform your job to the best of your ability.

10. God won't ask how many promotions you took to chase a dollar bill.

He will ask how many promotions you refused to advance your family's quality of life.

11. God won't ask how many times you didn't run around on your spouse.

He will ask how many times you did.

12. God won't ask how many degrees you had.

He will ask how many people you thanked for helping you get those degrees.

13. God won't ask what your parents did to help you.

He will ask what you did to help your parents.

14. God won't ask what you did to help yourself.

He will ask what you did to help others.

15. God won't ask how many friends you had.

He will ask how many people you were a friend to.

16. God won't ask what you did to protect your rights.

He will ask what you did to protect the rights of others.

17. God won't ask what neighborhood you lived in.

He will ask what other neighborhoods you visited.

18. God won't ask how many times you told the truth.

He will ask how many times you told a lie.

19. God won't ask about the color of your skin.

He will ask about the color of your heart.

20. God won't ask how many times your deeds matched your words.

He will ask how many times they didn't.

All of us will stand before God someday...and everything we did, said, and thought will all come to light. I don't know about you but I have some things I want to make right.

Tears

Tears.

Of all the tears we cry,

No two are the same.

Some we'll never know,

And those we know by name.

Each of those tiny tears,

We do not cry in vain.

For each of those tears we shed,

Help to ease our pain.

Tears we shed in anger,

Tears we shed in fear,

Tears we shed for the sad times,

And those who are not here.

Sometimes we cry for happiness,

These are the best tears of all,

For a smile can soothe the hurt,

When tears begin to fall.

They say that tears are a weakness,

But don't be taken in,

For it takes a stronger man to cry openly,

Than those that cry within.

Love is the only emotion,

Stronger by far than grief.

But when our love is lost,

Tears can help bring relief.

Angels

Angels in My Garden

Among my gift begonias
Is one called "Angel-wing",
So true to form I fancy
I hear the seraphs sing.
For surely higher beings
Inspired the, friendly hearts
Of my new next-door neighbors
To give me these "new starts".

O Angels, hover always
About this garden spot!
Help- me to share life's blossoms
With those who have them not!
And from your shining wing-tips
Shake fragrance for the hearts
Of beauty-hungry thousands
Today, who need new starts!

MILES TO MEET AN ANGEL

Miles to Meet an Angel

Driving home from a long trip, the car made strange noises until it finally broke down in the middle of nowhere. By Mary Ramey

My husband Don and I had planned a trip of a lifetime, and in 2000 we were finally able to take our journey.

Our home was located in the Pacific northwest in the San Juan Islands, and our dream was to drive across the states to the Atlantic Ocean, up into Nova Scotia, and then back home across Canada. We had purchased a newer car for the trip and took in all the tourist sites along the way. Places we had read about or seen in magazines became a reality for us. It was such an adventure--one that we knew would only happen for once. All went well on the trip and we started home.

We were somewhere in the back roads of Canada when we started hearing a strange noise coming from our car. We stopped several times to check for the source of the sound, but we couldn't see anything. Finally, we stopped in the middle of nowhere to fill up on gas and check again. Still finding nothing, we continued on to the next big town and to a garage. It was getting late in the day and we still had about 100 miles left to the city. We must have been about five miles away from the gas station when we heard a loud sound. Pulling over, we saw that we had lost the tread from one of the rear tires. The tread had been on the inside of the tire which is why we couldn't see it when checking earlier.

Since we were on our way home, the trunk was loaded down with extra things we had purchased. Naturally, the spare tire was under everything. So here we were on the side of the loneliest highway, unloading the trunk, and trying to find the spare. As we were doing so, a car pulled up behind us and parked about 50 feet away. The car sat there for a while, and then a young man got out and asked if we needed help.

Don, being a bit upset, started to say that we were OK. But, I said that we needed help. The young man started helping us unload the trunk and even changed the tire for us. Then, he loaded everything back into the trunk. We offered to pay him for his help, but he would not take anything. He revealed he had been at the gas station where we stopped for gas, and he had noticed the car making noise when we pulled out. He felt that he needed to check on us and had followed our car. Upon finishing his story, he got back in his car and went back in the direction from which he had come.

As my husband and I continued on the road, we were both silent a while, surprised by the whole event. The young man had gone out of his way to help two elderly people. Then, a thought dawned on me, and it was so clear: We had been visited by an angel. Realizing this, both of us thanked God for sending the angel to us in a moment of need.

BEING GOD'S CHILD
Posted On 03/19/2007 15:20:02
"BEING GOD'S CHILD"

"He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God? children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God" (John 1:10-13).

Many people have negative memories of their childhood (or present) relationships with their parents, particularly their fathers. So when the Bible speaks of God as our Father, we may cringe at the language, recalling our earlier hurts or present pains. It may be difficult to think of God as "Father," even though the Bible is clear that all who "believe in His name" become "children of God" (John 1:12). We should take care that our view of God is not colored by our experiences with other people. God Himself, the good, loving, caring and faithful Father, is the standard of measure, not the other way around.

But what does it really mean to be a "child of God?" We are not sons and daughters of God in the same sense that Jesus is Son, for Jesus is "God's one and only Son" (John 3:18). In the same way that there are many fathers in the world but only one Father in heaven, God has many sons and daughters in the world, but only one begotten Son, Jesus.

However, the metaphor of being children can help us understand our new relationship with God that occurs when we are "born again" (John 3:3).

We do not become God's children by our own deeds, because "in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith" (Galatians 3:26), just like we are not physically born by our own effort.

Therefore, what should our response be when, by God's grace, we become His children? We are told to "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children" (Ephesians 5:1). In fact, we know that "The one who won't practice righteous ways isn't from God, nor is the one who won't love brother or sister" (1 John 3:10, The Message). This is not a rigid requirement of a strict and unyielding usurper, but rather indicates the willing response of someone who has been reborn and considered a true legitimate child of our gracious and loving God.

"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" (1 John 3:1)

Sunday

Sitting here on a Saturday afternoon wondering…. Wondering what life has in store. I alternate between caring about my future and not caring at all, the fate the awaits me.
I grew up attending church, was baptized, and even married (the first time) in the church. I knew the 10 commandments, I knew what sin was, and I even knew what the cost of sin would be. I maintained a lifestyle that , looking back on is rather embarrassing and shameful. But living in the past is not what we are called to do. We are to always look forward, remember our past mistakes only to keep us from repeating them. We are not supposed to use them to belittle ourselves, beat up ourselves, or sit in remorseful shame because of them.
We are instructed to face our battles (our future) with the knowledge that we will be victors over whatever we face. In my writings I quote John 16:33 many times….
"I have told you these things,
so that in me you may have peace.
In this world you will have trouble.
But take heart!
I have overcome the world."
The bible also instructs us to put on the whole armor of God. In Ephesians 6:11, we are instructed to
Put on the full armor of God
so that you can take your stand
against the devil's schemes.
If you have every read this passage it lists the pieces of armor that are to be worn.
Stand firm then,
with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,
with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
and with your feet fitted with the readiness
that comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,
with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation
and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God.
Notice there is an item missing. There is no protection for the back. We know, yes we know, that God has our back and with Him supporting us, there is no reason to turn and run. Our victory is sure. The outcome of our battle has already been written.
Do I have a different perspective of life, knowing that I am truly a winner., that I have the full protection of God ? There are days…  those are the days that I pray that God breathe into me a renewed spirit. That He pick up my battle weary soul and carry it for a while, allowing me rest.
Are you facing the “I don't cares” ? if so, allow God to do what he does best. Allow Him to hold you up during the battle and protect you back, reassuring you that you are and always will be a winner and when you are too tired to go one, sink into God’s protective arms and allow Him to carry you.

In a friendship
We're free to expose,
Parts of ourselves
Nobody else knows.
But the thing that sustains it
And sets it apart,In a friendship
We're free to expose,
Parts of ourselves
Nobody else knows.
But the thing that sustains it
And sets it apart,
Is not something spoken
It's a bond of the heart.
True friends are rare
In a lifetime two or three,
I'm so glad it happened
Between you and me!
Is not something spoken
It's a bond of the heart.
True friends are rare
In a lifetime two or three,
I'm so glad it happened
Between you and me!
