Acts 3.1-26 1One day Peter and John went to the Temple at three o'clock in the afternoon, the hour for prayer. 2There at the Beautiful Gate, as it was called, was a man who had been lame all his life. Every day he was carried to the gate to beg for money from the people who were going into the Temple. 3When he saw Peter and John going in, he begged them to give him something. 4They looked straight at him, and Peter said, "Look at us!" 5So he looked at them, expecting to get something from them. 6But Peter said to him, "I have no money at all, but I give you what I have: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth I order you to get up and walk!" 7Then he took him by his right hand and helped him up. At once the man's feet and ankles became strong; 8he jumped up, stood on his feet, and started walking around. Then he went into the Temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God. 9The people there saw him walking and praising God, 10and when they recognized him as the beggar who had sat at the Beautiful Gate, they were all surprised and amazed at what had happened to him. 11As the man held on to Peter and John in Solomon's Porch, as it was called, the people were amazed and ran to them. 12When Peter saw the people, he said to them, "Fellow Israelites, why are you surprised at this, and why do you stare at us? Do you think that it was by means of our own power or godliness that we made this man walk? 13The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has given divine glory to his Servant Jesus. But you handed him over to the authorities, and you rejected him in Pilate's presence, even after Pilate had decided to set him free. 14He was holy and good, but you rejected him, and instead you asked Pilate to do you the favor of turning loose a murderer. 15You killed the one who leads to life, but God raised him from death--and we are witnesses to this. 16It was the power of his name that gave strength to this lame man. What you see and know was done by faith in his name; it was faith in Jesus that has made him well, as you can all see. 17"And now, my friends, I know that what you and your leaders did to Jesus was due to your ignorance. 18God announced long ago through all the prophets that his Messiah had to suffer; and he made it come true in this way. 19Repent, then, and turn to God, so that he will forgive your sins. If you do, 20times of spiritual strength will come from the Lord, and he will send Jesus, who is the Messiah he has already chosen for you. 21He must remain in heaven until the time comes for all things to be made new, as God announced through his holy prophets of long ago. 22For Moses said, "The Lord your God will send you a prophet, just as he sent me, and he will be one of your own people. You are to obey everything that he tells you to do. 23Anyone who does not obey that prophet shall be separated from God's people and destroyed.' 24And all the prophets who had a message, including Samuel and those who came after him, also announced what has been happening these days. 25The promises of God through his prophets are for you, and you share in the covenant which God made with your ancestors. As he said to Abraham, "Through your descendants I will bless all the people on earth.' 26And so God chose his Servant and sent him to you first, to bless you by making every one of you turn away from your wicked ways." VERSE: Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. -- Ephesians 3:20-21 http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+3:20-21&translation=kjv
THOUGHT: Sometimes there is nothing left for us to do except praise God! While we may sometimes dream of doing great things for God and his Kingdom, the dreams aren't as big as God's plans. While we may be richly talented, influential, powerful, or rich, these are merely tools in God's hands, not symbols of our sufficiency. "God is able" has to be one of the best and most accurate phrases in the Bible. But this time, it's said about his work in you in me. He is able much more than we imagine to work through and in us. What can we say to that? Hallelujah!
PRAYER: Loving Father, please help me better know and live your will. I want to be your vessel of ministry, healing, blessing, and hope to those around me at work and play. Please use me to your glory today, and always. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

Acts 10.34-48 34Peter began to speak: "I now realize that it is true that God treats everyone on the same basis. 35Those who fear him and do what is right are acceptable to him, no matter what race they belong to. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, proclaiming the Good News of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37You know of the great event that took place throughout the land of Israel, beginning in Galilee after John preached his message of baptism. 38You know about Jesus of Nazareth and how God poured out on him the Holy Spirit and power. He went everywhere, doing good and healing all who were under the power of the Devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses of everything that he did in the land of Israel and in Jerusalem. Then they put him to death by nailing him to a cross. 40But God raised him from death three days later and caused him to appear, 41not to everyone, but only to the witnesses that God had already chosen, that is, to us who ate and drank with him after he rose from death. 42And he commanded us to preach the gospel to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God has appointed judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets spoke about him, saying that all who believe in him will have their sins forgiven through the power of his name." 44While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who were listening to his message. 45The Jewish believers who had come from Joppa with Peter were amazed that God had poured out his gift of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles also. 46For they heard them speaking in strange tongues and praising God's greatness. Peter spoke up: 47"These people have received the Holy Spirit, just as we also did. Can anyone, then, stop them from being baptized with water?" 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay with them for a few days.

We can pray for them. But more than that, we can pray that God will strengthen them with power through his indwelling Spirit. This same Holy Spirit raised Jesus from death (Eph. 1:19). This same Holy Spirit is God's great gift for those who ask (Luke 11:13). This same Holy Spirit reanimated a valley of dry bones (Ezekiel 37). And this same Holy Spirit will strengthen those we love in the Lord if we ask for him to! PRAYER: Mighty and awesome God, I have several brothers and sisters in Christ who need your grace, mercy, and power poured into their lives by your Spirit. Some need to be convicted of their sinfulness. Some need strength and courage for their difficult road ahead. Some need power to overcome besetting sin in their lives. Please strengthen them with your power in their inner being through your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name I pray. VERSE: But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. -- 2 Corinthians 4:7 http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+4:7&translation=kjv
THOUGHT: While there are many talented and successful Christians in the world today, they are merely vessels for God's message of grace, hope, and power. Our focus should never be on the container for the message. Instead, what is most important is the integrity of the messenger no matter the situation, so that the message can be seen without distraction. God's power is what sustains us, not our own, we are simply a vessel, a tool, in the hands of the Lord.
PRAYER: Almighty and all-powerful God, thank you for using me to minister to others as your partner in the work of grace. May my service help them more perfectly see the glory of your truth and grace you gave us in your Son. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. -- Psalm 2:11-12 http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+2:11-12&translation=kjvTHOUGHT: The LORD is God. We must not take for granted his holiness and might. But the incredible reality of God's grace is this: God, who thundered at Mount Sinai and spoke into existence the universe with its marvelous expanse, loves us and longs for us to draw near and find refuge in him. We can rejoice in reverent awe. We can praise with holy fear. We can rest secured because our trust is not in what is human, what is temporary, and what is vulnerable. The LORD is our God! PRAYER: Forgive me, Father, for the times that I have cheapened your grace with inappropriate speech and irresponsible behavior. You are God alone. You alone are worthy of praise. Thank you not only for being holy and mighty, but also for being near and providing me a place of refuge and protection. Thank you, dear Father, for being God! In Jesus' name. THOUGHT: At the end of the year, it sure is nice to be invited to rest in Jesus. So before we begin a new year, let's pause and place our hopes, our future, our dreams, and especially our burdens down at his feet and let him give us rest.
PRAYER: Teach me, O God, to learn to rest in your grace and providence more and worry less. I want to surrender my burdens to Jesus and let him teach me his way and how to find his rest. Sometimes I am so tired and weary I don't think I can continue, so please, dear Father, let me find rest in Jesus. In his holy name I offer this prayer. Amen.

December 28, 2006 Encouragement for Today "Hope for the Anxious Heart" Micca Monda Campbell, Proverbs 31 Ministries Speaker and Author, Director of Outreach Key Verse: John 14: 1-4, "Don't be troubled. You trust God, now trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am." (NLT) Devotion: Ministry calls me away from home several times a year. My absence sometimes causes my youngest son to experience separation anxiety. As I'm preparing to leave, he often asks, "Where are you going and how long will you be gone?" His questions reveal his concerns about what might happen while I'm away and how will he manage without me. I imagine the disciples must have felt the same way when Jesus told them He was preparing to leave earth and return to heaven. I can almost hear their concerns. "If you go, who will help us if our world suddenly turns upside down?" Jesus comforts them by saying, " Don 't be troubled," and then shares three reasons why peace should fill their hearts instead of worry. Peace fills our hearts when we take God at His Word. We forget that God's Word is living and active. In it we can find every answer to our every need. Sometimes our experiences overwhelm us and we can't see the whole picture. God's Word is our guide. Jesus told his disciples, "You trust in God, now trust in me." He was saying you can always take God's Word at face value in any situation. Peace fills our hearts when we remember that this world is not our home. Peter encourages, "In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials (1 Peter 1:6). Peter reminds us that trials only last for a little while. They are only temporary compared to eternity in heaven, our true home. How is it we endure the cold, flu infested months of winter? We endure because we know it's only temporary and spring is soon coming! One day when you and I are in the presence of God, there will be no more suffering - no more tears, heartache, sorrow, or death. Keeping the perspective that heaven is our true and final home creates peace during hard times. Peace fills our hearts because Jesus is coming back! I reassure my son by reminding him that my trip will not last forever. I will return. In the meantime, he can talk to me by phone whenever he needs. Likewise we find comfort in knowing that one day Jesus will return for us. Notice that He says, "I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am." Jesus is not going to send for you or me. He is going to come himself and take us to a special place that He has prepared so that we will never be apart again. In the meantime, we have His Word and can talk to Him through prayer anytime at any place. If life's problems have left you feeling lonely and depressed, remember Christ's words …"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Christ has not left you alone. Trust in God's Word. Allow these truths to dispel the lie of your emotions, and peace will be your companion until Christ returns for us. My Prayer for Today: Dear Lord, Thank You for Your Word that never changes and still communicates Your love, truth, and guidance everyday. Thank You for prayer so that I can talk with You anytime.. Mostly, thank You for heaven, my eternal home. Help me not to be overly concerned with this world, but to keep my gaze upward anticipating Your return. In Jesus' Name, Amen. ETC CORNER A Busy Woman's Guide to Prayer by Cheri Fuller Application Steps: Search God's Word until you find a verse or passage that speaks directly to your situation. Ask God to reveal its truth as you mediate on the verse. Then, apply that truth to your situation. Reflections Points: What causes you to have anxiety, fear, a need to control, or a lack of faith? How do you usually deal with anxiety? How can trusting in God's Word calm your heart? How does the truth, "I have overcome the world" affect your perspective?
