Goodmorning everyone. I Thank the Lord for allowing me to wake up this morning. He's not done with me yet.
My question is I have a 6 yr old and an 8 yr old I am having trouble finding a family devotional that would not be over their heads and that they can be involved in.
Any ideas are welcome
Thanks and God Bless
Kim

Two suggestions. Being the mom of 4 sons, I have had the same dilemma. Are you familiar with Veggie Tales and 123 Penguins? I have had 'bible studies' with my little ones before, completely set to the 'meaning' behind some of the veggie tales and penguins cartoons. For instance: if the topic is sharing, I advance the video to the end to get the scripture that they are going to use, we talk before the video about sharing and then after the video we read the scripture (from their NIV Adventure bible so they can understand it..) discuss it, I let them put in their input, and we generally look up other verses too...and read them...and usually in the bible we use there is a place in the back for 'activities'. If the child/children are not reading yet, you can do the reading and have them repeat some fo the scriptures with you. They love this!
SECOND IDEA:
I have a book called "One year book of devotions for boys", put out by TYNDALE KIDS. It says that it is for boys, but I used it with my 3-7 yr. old youth at the church, both boys and girls. I will email you a lesson from one page and you can judge whether or not it works for you.
Hope this helps.
God Bless You!!
Gina

Try using puppets to act out situations and have your kids solve a problem. You might be surprised at how they solve the issue. Be prepared with the kid's bible and the scriptures that you are trying to get across as they will get into the puppet show and want to continue adding to the situation. My 4 year old loves this way of active teaching. Role playing also works well and gives them actual words to use and things to do when a situation arrises. Our Family uses situations that are comming into our daughters lives to create the devotional to give them the tools to deal with the situation. Running a home daycare I have kids from many different backgrounds that I do devotionals with. I usually spend a week on a topic and use the bible verses with activities, the more the kids do the more they remember and the more I learn about the kids!

Oh wow, i'm so thankful there's a thread about this lol. My parents are atheist so i'm trying to teach my younger sister about the bible, and sometimes when she innocently opens it up and reads a few chapters, i find myself saying 'YVONNE WAIT!" because there are a couple of terms that are not appropriate for her age level haha. I'm scared that i'm tramatizing her or something, since it's supposed to be the Good Book and i'm spazzing out if i don't know what she's reading! I'll normaly go over what she learned at youth group or the 10 commandments..but it gets so old! thanks for providing these ideas :D

Being a homeschool mom, I have 2 great ones I can suggest. One is Little Blessings, Blessings Every Day and the other is the new Veggie Tale's Family Devotional. Also I have seen lots of great devotionals at our local bible bookstore for different sexes and age groups. You might want to check yours out. |
