So lies is clearly a sin, because it is following satans away and against christ who tells the truth in everything, and it can be a form of stealing.
This topic though, is about acceptable lies: what lies (if any) are acceptable to tell. I'd say it is ok if someone suspicious asks for someone in the house, you can lie and say that person isnt there. However when a student has a day off school, i would preffer a parent to tell the teacher the real reason for the absence, i wish my mum wouldnt lie about it. Or if a cook asks you if you liked the food, you can tell them you didnt if you really didn't, but in a polite way. All will be told on judgement day, so theres no use telling lies to people to make them feel better. discuss and debate.... |

Well, I have been thinking about this for a couple of years now. I asked my dad, and he pointed out to me a passage in the bible. Joshua Chapter 2. Even though she lied, the Lord, and the Israelites spared her. On this I came to the conclusion lies are only acceptable when they are their to help other, not hurt them. This could be a really tricky situtation though. What i mean by this, is if you are lieing to protect the lives of people it is alright, but if you do it to hurt people, or for self gain, then it is a sin. Corrections are welcome. |

Well in the second world war, there was a seargant and a soilder looking for jews. The soilder climbed the ladder and was asked if he could see anything, but he responded with "There's nobody there" that was surely a righteous lie, sparing believers from being killed, i say there was nothing wrong with that, here's the frilling question though, "would Jesus have told the truth in such a situation and said: yes, there are 20 Jews there, but you will not lay a finger on them" i imagine it would have gone like tht

Yeah... maybe... But the sergeant probably would go after the Jews anyway.
I think I agree with Future_Pastor on this one: Lying is "acceptable" only when you are doing it to protect someone. That's my two cents. :) |
