Paul makes a fashion statement. Dozens of Girls Booted from Prom in Louisiana for Revealing Dresses
MARRERO, La. — Dozens of girls were turned away from a prom because a teacher thought their dresses were too revealing. Families of the girls said the teacher cited alleged violations of the Jefferson Parish schools dress code, most of them related to excessive display of cleavage. "I was embarrassed," said Miranda Melerine, 17, a senior at the Marrero high school, who was among those barred by teacher Judy Gardner, an adviser to senior activities. "We can't go back to prom night. Prom's over. Our prom has been stolen from us." But Jefferson Parish schools spokesman Jeff Nowakowski said Gardner did nothing wrong and that the ones in error were girls who showed up with dresses that didn't comply with a district code that says: "A student will not wear clothing that exposes the student's back, chest or midriff." The policy, which also strictly restricts any use of fishnet or see-through clothing, has been in effect for years and is included in a handbook that parents sign, Nowakowski said. He said that students who didn't gain admittance Friday night were given a chance to leave and alter their dresses to bring them into compliance, and that some did that. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ. 12-14So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about making a fashion statement for Christ? It's that time of year when students are dressing up for prom and in today's story, some girls didn't dress enough. After reading Paul's words you have to think about the fact that maybe our clothes aren't revealing enough - of our new nature in Christ. Even if you're not into designer labels, you need to know that God, our designer, has a selected clothing line for us to wear. Don't worry. Christ's fashion is not seasonal or trendy. Just holy. Paul is challenging us to wear our brand new nature which is what Christ gives us when we receive His gift of salvation for our sins. It means that our actions should match our faith. If we claim to follow Christ, our "look" should be like Jesus. Christ-like clothing will not match the world's "look", but Jesus calls us to make a "fashion statement". Besides, wouldn't it be fun to start a new trend? How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
