safety for the children

I have recently started trying to visit the new members and post a welcome on their site.  I focus on the kids and pre-teens, because I have two myself on this site and I know how excited they are when someone posts something on their page.  I was disturbed to notice so much personal info posted by some of the pre-teens.  I took the time to suggest that they may want to reconsider divulging so much personally identifying info(full name, date of birth, hometown, and school they attend, not to mention the very detailed surveys).  I hope I did not step over the line, or offend anyone by doing so.  I love this site and feel it is as safe as it can be, but we need to be realistic and know that nothing is 100% safe, and common sense and a bit of parental supervision is needed to insure that JCfaith doesn't make it easy for wolves in sheeps clothing to have access to our young lambs.  I have worked in the child abuse field for years, so I am perhaps a bit sensitive to the issue.  I welcome feedback about this concern.

Ma'am, you have a point. Me being one of the ages you spoke of, I agree that nothing, in fact, is 100% safe. The only way to ensure 100% safety is to perform a background check on all signups. That would be overly costly and inefficient.

People DO need to be careful. I watch not to enter the "invincible" mentality held by way too many youth. Just because it's a Christian website, it doesn't mean everyone here is Christian. I have never given out my full name over the internet, save my subscription to PC World.

What people (minors, in particular) need to know is that the Internet is a great resource and social tool, but you have to use common sense. Plenty of people forget that on the Web...
