The beach looked like it would go on forever. Jenn’s hand was warm to the touch as we walked along the ocean line. The sand was wet and soft as we both walked down the beach not caring where we ended up. Jenn breathed in the ocean air as I sighed. I was going to be leaving soon and this would probably be the last chance Jenn and I would spend together. Jenn’s dark brown hair blew in the wind as her bright green eyes cut right through me. Her tanned skin was so smooth and perfect; it was like the cloudy sky, the clouds so soft and smooth. Blazing clouds moved along the horizon. The sun was setting, and it cast an orange, red glow. “What are we going to do after you get back?” Jenn asked. I had not told her that I wouldn’t be coming back. It was too heart wrenching.
“Settle down, and have some kids,” I suggested. Jenn smiled and stared at me in my uniform. My medals gleamed in the sun’s glow, and my dress shoes scuffed along the sand.
“You know we have to figure out a wedding day first,” Jenn said stopping and holding my arm. I smiled and looked deep in her eyes. My heart was skipping faster as she came a bit closer. I just wanted to hold her and never let go. I pulled her close and held onto her. I hugged her not keeping my eyes off the buildings around me. The sun was setting fast.
“Jenn…you know I will always love you.” I said.
“Yes of course, I love you too.” Jenn said.
“Will you wait for me?” I asked. Jenn pulled away from me staring me in the eye, her bright eyes wet with tears. I held her head in my hands. Jenn’s eyes suddenly knew what I was thinking.
“No,” she gasped, I glanced down the deserted road. I caught a small shape coming out of the darkness, an ancient pickup truck. Jenn gripped my hands. “Listen to me. You are going to come home. No matter what. Promise me.” I looked in her eyes and started to walk towards the road, helping her move her legs, as she tried to delay my leaving. The truck slowed down with a couple of women and men in the back.
“Will you wait for me?” I asked now desperate for her answer.
Jenn looked at me, her torn face was destroying my inside as a man jumped out and picked her up. Her hands grabbed mine, Jenn knew she had to leave it was not safe. She bent over the side, her face next to mine. She kissed my cheek and whispered “Yes,”
That’s all I needed. The driver pushed his foot on the gas pedal as the truck sped away.
I stood there alone. A military jeep came to a stop, and the two soldiers looked at me quickly. The chaos that the government protected has come. They drew their guns, but I was quicker and pulled my automatic hiding in my belt. The passenger collapsed with a pull of my trigger. The driver’s gun exploded as a pain in my chest erupted just as I clipped the driver’s skull with a bullet. They both dropped out of their seats and lay on the ground. I stumbled backwards and landed into the sand. I looked up at the orange, red glow of the sun gasping for my last breath as I wondered if Jenn would wait for me.
