To Skate or Not to Skate
Posted On 09/28/2007 16:37:35 by Skate4Glory

I’ve been skateboarding since I was 9 years old but I didn’t get into doing tricks until I was 10. I met 3 awesome Christian guys who have become my best friends.

When I was 11 years old I entered a skateboarding competition. For being a beginner I placed 3rd out of 10. I ’ve competed in 3 other competitions since and I placed 2nd,3rd and 4th. I hope to someday place 1st. That will always be a dream and goal of mine.

Being a skateboarder takes lots of patience and practice. I’ve also had a lot of falls. I have broken my thumb and sprained my ankle. But the worst injury I had changed my life.

It happened last Summer in June 2006. It was just one week after my last competition. I used to be an avid skateboarder and did both street and vert. It started out as a normal day I was at the skate park with my 3 best friends as usual. I was on a vert ramp and my friends were watching. I was 8 feet up in the air when I lost my footing. I fell 8 feet on onto the vert ramp below.I hit my head and got a concussion.I was knocked unconscious. Then my board came back down and hit me in the chest. It bruised my right lung and broke 2 ribs. My friends were on the sidelines watching all this happen. They came running over as the medics took care of me. When I was being taken away in the ambulance the medics asked that only one of my friends to come. My friend Connor came since I have known him the longest. The other 2 met me at the hospital. I was in a coma for 2 weeks with breathing complications. Since I have asthma it made the breathing harder. Just 3 months after the accident I went back to skateboarding I spent the majority of that Summer recovering from my injuries. I didnt want to quit skating so I decided to only skate street. I haven’t gone vert skating since.

I know that the Lord was with me every step of the way. He decided not to take me home to heaven that day,and I am thankful for that because I would have left behind so many people I love. I didnt let this one accident keep me from my skating.I just thought of it as a learning experience.
Tony Hawk who is one of my favorite Pro-Skateboarders once said:"I won't quit skating until I am physically unable."this is one of my favorite quotes and after the accident it has helped me to never give up no matter what happens. I just  have to stay strong and trust the Lord.

Today I am still skating street I still don’t know If I will go back to vert but I love skateboarding. If I do decide to start vert skating again than I will be more careful and not let anything like that happen again.

I want to continue skateboarding in the future my goal in life is to be a Pro-Skateboarder and go into Ministry so I can teach skateboarding and share the Gospel.
